I’ve worked dead end jobs and then emptied my bank balance for the next plane ticket, sold off cars or assets to cover a weekend away I just had to have, devoured books of other people’s travel experiences to live the dream and then sacrificied friends, relationships and families to the travel binge that followed – people that then have to deal with you when you return with post travel blues.
Welcome to the VIP Backpacker’s Blog!
If you’re relating to any of this, you’ve come to the right place. The VIP Backpacker‘s blog is about travel stories, books, tours and adventures done on a shoestring or a heartbeat. I’m to be your host on cyber travels around the world and as I’m a travel writer I apparently have some sort of credentials to do so. But the truth is I’m just hopelessly hooked on what has become a kind of lifestyle job.
I admit it has to be up there amongst the world’s best jobs although the occasional offer of fried spiders, fermented mare’s milk or maggot infested cheeses haven’t really rated. Nor have the late night unwanted gropes on buses, car accidents in Mali and knife pulls in Senegal. But travel is about the good and the bad and hey, I’m willing to share all.
Travelling and travel writing isn’t always all it’s cracked up to be. You spend a lot of time in transit, waiting in airports and dealing with time zone changes. Then when you finally get there you’re haggling over taxis, eating unidentifiable foods and sleeping in crummy rooms with creaky beds. And of course you have to continually document the experience so you can write about it later and earn enough money that will hopefully just about cover your expenses. But there are the undeniable benefits such as dining with Maharajas in India, enjoying a sunset over a whitewashed Algarve town or staying in a 14th Century Italian villa.
World’s Best Job in Queensland
However if you thought I had the best job in the world, you obviously missed Tourism Queensland’s campaign to find an island caretaker for the Great Barrier Reef. Some 34,000 people applied and lucky pom Ben Southall beat them all to it. But just in case you missed the recent news, interviews are now being taken to find four mates to join him, so you still might be … head to the http://www.islandreefjob.com.au website if you’re keen.
But even if you’re unsuccessful, but feeling inspired by the vision of white sands, blue water and colourful fish take advantage of some superb winter weather in Queensland at the moment and head up to the Whitsundays or Cairns anyway for your own reef trip. And of course here at VIP Backpackers there are loads of options to help you explore those Reef Islands.
As for me I’m off to Borneo next week for some jungle touring so to keep your own travel dreams alive, stay tuned in!
In the meantime to get the ball rolling, what’s your idea of the world’s best travel job? Think location or profession even if it’s handing out martinis from a bar on a Caribbean island.
Hope you’re enjoying the VIP Backpacker’s Travel Blog. There’ll be an update added every other Friday, so keep tuning in to keep your travel dreams alive! If there are any travel topics you want covered feel free to contact me, Jo, at firstname.lastname@example.org
