I’m writing this from 40,000 feet somewhere above Malaysia. Like the proverbial sardine in a tin I‘m squashed, uncomfortable and sticky… But I’ve taken the plunge and tried out the new Air Asia X services from Australia to Kuala Lumpur. I’ve done their short haul flights across Asia before, but their new services both to Australia and London are going to revolutionize travel for the budget conscious. And that includes me too. Yes it’s no frills, to the extreme. I’m talking bus row like seats that do not recline and a rather exorbitant price for water but the food is good and you can order entertainment to help pass the time. In any case, for the cost of a seat about half the price of other airlines, you can’t really complain.
However while I’m due for the wilds of Borneo shortly, I can’t help but feel I’m missing out on things at home. It’s always the way , but in my hometown Brisbane, the weather has been incredible recently. I’m talking 30 degree days at the end of winter, blue skies, and even better, both the Q150 celebrations to commemorate the state’s birthday are banging on this month and the fantastic Brisbane Festival is getting underway. The Brisbane Festival runs from September 12 – October 3 and starts on the first evening with Riverfire, a fireworks spectacular held around the river. This is then followed by a spate of concerts, theatre, music and dance in backyards and locations across the city. It is fantastic.
So now is the time to come to Brisbane, if you haven’t thought of it already. Not only do you have access to a city with balmy weather, a pleasant riverside, good markets and fine food; but there’s also prime access to the Moreton Bay islands, amazing forest and parks, great wildlife and all the outdoor pursuits you could think of. To help organize your stay VIP Backpackers has accommodation dotted around the city and plenty of tour options including river cruises, rock climbing and more.
But you won’t see me there right now, I’ll just be dreaming of home from a few thousand miles away…
