If you’ve come to Australia one of the best things you can do with your time is learn to surf. Not only can you catch some killer waves but you’ll learn some pretty cool lingo too like what it means to do an acid drop, go goofty foot or get in the green room.
VIP Backpackers has some fantastic surf packages all over the country and a few are listed below. These take place on amazing bits of beach such as famous stretches like Bondi in Sydney, the Great Ocean Road where you’ll have fantastic scenery to keep you company, the hype of Byron Bay on the north New South Wales coast, and the renowned Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast in Queensland.
Of course if you do want to learn you’ll need a few basics so let’s help you out.
Anyone can surf
The only skills you need are swimming and some general fitness. And you will get fitter the more you do so it’s a good way to travel and stay fit!
Getting out there
Your instructors will teach you how to assess the conditions so you can pick the best conditions for your ability and avoid trouble spots – rips, rough water, what waves will dump you badly and so on. Again trust me, this is an important part of surfing.
Controlling and using your board is obviously key to surfing. Instructors will help you get the hang of both and show you skills like how to paddle and duck dive under waves so you don’t get creamed when you attempt to get out beyond the breaks. They’ll also show you how to get on the wave and when to stand and when to jump off. The board is your friend and once you learn to trust it you’ll improve in no time. Surf schools also have special boards that have better flotation making it a lot easier to stand. And when you do stand for the first time there’s no better feeling in the world!
So yeah that’s pretty much it – of course now it’s over to you. If we’ve tempted you enough and overcome what fears you might have about surfing then check out some of these operators.
Ultimate spot to learn – Bondi Beach
Yes this is the place to learn. Not only can you enjoy surfing on one of the most famous beaches in the world you’ve also got Bondi Rescue lifeguards on hand should you need them – which you won’t of course!!
