Learning to surf 101

If you’ve come to Australia one of the best things you can do with your time is learn to surf. Not only can you catch some killer waves but you’ll learn some pretty cool lingo too like what it means to do an acid drop, go goofty foot or get in the green room.

VIP Backpackers has some fantastic surf packages all over the country and a few are listed below. These take place on amazing bits of beach such as famous stretches like Bondi in Sydney, the Great Ocean Road where you’ll have fantastic scenery to keep you company, the hype of Byron Bay on the north New South Wales coast, and the renowned Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast in Queensland. Top 10 Christmas locations Down Under

Our latest newsletter is now out!! Here’s a snippet and two of the 10 locations we recommend:

With Christmas fast approaching we give you a list of ten places down under in Australia and New Zealand that you can sip wines, sit on a beach, enjoy the views and the festivities. All these locations are the perfect place to wile away a few lazy summer days and a good sojourn for the Christmas period.

WHITSUNDAYS, QUEENSLAND

There is no bad time of year to visit the gorgeous central Queensland but Christmas is particularly wonderful. Think wonderful warm days, golden sands, aquamarine waters and a plethora of wildlife to see above and below the sea. Highlights include a visit to world famous Whitehaven Beach with its gorgeous silica white sands, sailing trips and tours around the islands, all the night life at Airlie Beach and tropical island getaways.

A highlight for many VIP Backpackers is staying on the Adventure Island resort on South Molle island where you can snorkel, dive, paddle board or bush walk to your hearts content in eco splendour. But we also have accommodation in Airlie Beach.

THE GRAMPIANS, VICTORIA

Just 235km from Melbourne, the Grampians National Park is a fantastic way to get back to nature this Christmas and a good way to escape the crowds either in Melbourne or Adelaide or along the Great Ocean Road. Heritage listed for its rich natural beauty, visitors can enjoy rock art sites, striking sandstone mountain ranges, notable wildflowers and fabulous walking tracks.

VIP Backpackers has accommodation in Halls Gap – one of the best locations in this spectacular wilderness.

Have a whale of a time – whale watching downunder

Our October newsletter is out now with details about all the places to see migrating humpback whales on Australia’s eastern coast.

The season runs from May to November so there’s still time to get to one of these locations (read more here…) to check out the action. While it is often possible to see the whales from headlands and beaches along the coast, the best way to see them up close with all that flipper action is on one of our many tours.

So book into one of our hostels anywhere from Newcastle to Port Stephens, Coffs Harbour, Byron Bay, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Caloundra, Mooloolabah, Noosa, Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay to see them for yourself or start searching our tours for options – click here to take you to some of the options.

You’ll have a whale of a time!

Post Travel Blues

I’m back at home now recovering from my 10 weeks on the road. I’ve washed my clothes, dusted out my pack, displayed my souvenirs and showed photos to anyone that shows the slightest interest; but really the memories of travel are already starting to fade with the return to routine. These post-travel blues are very sad but fortunately I was saved today when Maureen Wheeler, co-founder of Lonely Planet with husband Tony, came on the radio to talk my favourite subject – travel!
